Replicating hedge fund returns is not necessarily a strategy, but has become an interesting avenue for investors seeking exposure to hedge fund beta with high liquidity, low fees, and low investment minimums. However, the replication process can be done in several ways and not everything can be replicated. This panel discussion will cover some approaches to replication, the trade-offs of replication vs investing in underlying funds, and the impact of the wrapper on implementation and performance.

Andrew Beer
Organization: DBI


Andrew Beer is the co-Founder of DBi, a pioneer in the replication of hedge fund returns. DBi today manages $2.5 billion in ETFs, mutual funds and UCITS vehicles. Prior to founding DBi, Andrew was a co-Founder of Pinnacle Asset Management, a leading multi-manager commodity hedge fund, and Apex Capital, a relative value hedge fund. He began his hedge fund career as an early portfolio manager for Seth Klarman at the Baupost Group. Andrew received is MBA as Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School and his AB, magna cum laude, from Harvard College.


Bob Elliott

Bob Elliott is the Co-Founder, CEO, and CIO of Unlimited, Unlimited, which uses machine learning to create low-cost index replications of 2 & 20 style alternative investments that are deployed to a wide range of investors via institutional products and ETFs. He was recognized as one of “2023 Tomorrow Titans” by The Hedge Fund Journal. Prior to founding Unlimited, Bob served on the Investment Committee at Bridgewater Associates, led Ray Dalio’s investment research team and authored hundreds of Bridgewater’s widely read Daily Observations. Bob holds a BA from Harvard.


Aaron Filbeck

Aaron Filbeck, CAIA, CFA, CFP®, CIPM, FDP oversees UniFi by CAIA™, a learning platform dedicated to educating the private wealth management industry on alternative investments. He was previously responsible for leading and implementing CAIA Association's content agenda, thought leadership initiatives, and content development for the CAIA Charter Program. Aaron is a frequent speaker and writer on various topics of alternative investments and his work has been published in CAIA’s educational programs, numerous academic journals, books, and industry publications. Aaron’s industry experience lies in private wealth management, where he oversaw asset allocation, portfolio construction, and manager research efforts for high-net-worth individuals and institutional retirement plans. He earned a B.S. with distinction in Finance and a Master of Finance from Penn State University. He holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM), and Financial Data Professional (FDP) designations, and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. He is a Past President of CFA Society Columbus and serves as a board director and Programs Chair for CFA Society Philadelphia. Aaron is an adjunct professor and serves on multiple advisory boards for Penn State University.


Corey Hoffstein

Corey Hoffstein is the CEO and CIO of Newfound Research, where he responsible for overseeing the Newfound’s investment team and the ongoing management of Newfound’s investment strategies. Corey is an active researcher and his work has been published in the Journal of Indexing and the Journal of Alternative Investments. He is also the host of the popular quantitative investing podcast Flirting with Models. Corey holds a Master of Science in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, cum laude, from Cornell University.
